Bye, Belgian Bars: A "Magnum Manila - Pleasure Store" Review
Before
Magnum’s “Pleasure Store” here in Manila closes on July 26, I made sure to make
my last hurrah and have a quick visit to experience their sinfully irresistible
dessert one last time. I say irresistible because I totally ignored the fact
that I’m cheating on my diet for 3 days in a row already! Apparently, no diet
program can stand against my love for sugar.
The
Pleasure Store has to draw its curtains because it apparently is just a pop-up
store (yeah I know all that hype and
effort, yet just a pop-up!)¸ and it’s supposed to be here for 12 months
only. To celebrate a year of designer ice cream bars of exquisite taste and
style, Magnum Manila will feature new unique creations by Chef Miko Aspiras and
Chef Him Uy de Baron. This sealed the deal and I told myself that my diet can
wait.
Campfire S’mores – Php 280.00
This is my personal
favorite among the desserts that we had that day. A playful twist is added to
the classic s’mores, which was deconstructed to create a new masterpiece. Torched
marshmallow coats a Belgian choclate-coated vanilla Magnum bar, which leans on top
of a slab of dark chocolate ganache and graham tart.
The best
part about this beauty was the slab of dark chocolate. Pair it with the melted
marshmallows, or you can have it on its own!
Magnum Anniversary Cake – Php 350.00
What better
way to celebrate an anniversary than with cake? A Belgian chocolate-dipped
vanilla Magnum perches on top of a moist ombre honey cake. A lighted golden
candle on top of the Magnum bar completes the celebratory vibe. However, this
one was more for the looks than the taste, IMO.
Crepe du Jour – Php 380.00
Definitely
one of the most Instagram-worthy dishes they serve, the Crepe de Jour is made
up of layers of French crepe and cream, and topped with fruits in season and
Belgian chocolate-dipped Magnum bar.
Ours had
mangoes and strawberries for the fruit toppings, which was perfect because
these are my two favorite fruits. The crepe itself was also thick and flavorful
on its own.
***
Aside from
the three dishes we tried above, their other two new signature dishes (offered
until July 26), are the Matcha Lava Cake
(Php 280.00), and the Make My Heart Melt (Php 320.00), which I would have also
loved to try for its pleasant, “melting” surprise. All the dishes are pretty heavy on the
stomach though, so I don’t recommend having an entire dish for yourself…unless
you’re me, maybe.
